Characteristics which are important for Adhesives/Sealants/Coatings applications are:

• Soltex products can play an important role in formulating pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA), hot-melt adhesives (HMA), and hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives (HMPSA). Producers of PSA formulate products for end use applications such as paper laminates, labels and tapes; masking and friction tapes; surgical tapes; colorless adhesives; paper, foil, and fiber laminates; and industrial tapes.
• Polybutene is used as a primary ingredient in wood and concrete sealers and construction coating applications. Wood and concrete sealers are used to provide water repellency to outdoor wood structures such as decks, walkways, patios, garage floors and driveways.
• The function of polybutene in sealants is to plasticize the elastomer. This also adds tack and extends the elastomer, thereby reducing the formulation cost.
• In construction coating, polybutene is used in form release and "bond breaker" formulations.
• Polybutene exhibits permanent tackiness and is compatible with many resins, elastomers and solvents. In addition, polybutene offers good color and chemical resistance.
• The addition of polybutene has shown improved quick stick and peel strength in elastomers such as high molecular weight polybutene, styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymers, and styrene butadiene rubber.
• Nonionic polybutene emulsions may be formulated into water-based pressure-sensitive adhesives to enhance adhesion and temperature stability while lowering the cost in adhesives for packaging, labels, and product assembly.
• Polybutene acts as a polymer extender, plasticizer, tackifier, and wetting agent when incorporated into HMA. It can increase the cold temperature flexibility. Polybutene is compatible with butyl rubber, styrene-isoprene-styrene copolymers, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyurethane, and low density.
• Thixocal Sulfonates provide rheological control and allow high coating build.
